| dc.description | El artículo explora la dimensión material y simbólica de la producción de las movilidades urbanas a través de la historia del ferrocarril subterráneo de Buenos Aires (Subte), analizando el modo en que este fue concebido, construido y experimentado. El período cubre el proceso de metropolización de Buenos Aires y abarca desde la aparición de los primeros proyectos (1886) y hasta la finalización de la red principal (1944). El artículo se focaliza en discursos y prácticas para dar cuenta de las representaciones ambivalentes suscitadas por el subterráneo, del modo en que se convierte, por un lado, en la solución ideal al problema del tráfico callejero y refuerza el ideario del progreso y la confianza en la tecnología como beneficio social, y por otro, del modo en que es satirizado y rechazado por su “naturaleza subterránea”, por significar un espacio de disciplina y mecanización del viaje. Finalmente, el artículo también discute la importancia de la dimensión cultural para el estudio de las movilidades urbanas. | - |
| dc.description | The paper explores the material and symbolic aspects of the production of urban mobilities through the history of Buenos Aires’ underground railways (Subte), analyzing the way in which it was conceived, built, and experienced. The period of analysis matches Buenos Aires’ metropolization and goes from the emergence of the early projects (1886) to the completion of the main underground network (1944). Focusing on discourses and practices, the article gives an account of the ambivalent representations triggered by the underground railway, of the mode in which it became, on the one hand, the ideal solution to street traffic problems and it reinforces the imagery of progress and the confidence in technologies as benefiting society as a whole, and on the other, the way in which the underground railway was satirized and rejected due to its “subterranean nature”, and because in practice it meant a space of regimentation and mechanization of travel. Finally, the paper also discusses the importance of the cultural dimension for the study of urban mobilities. | - |
