Entre ellos había una élite intelectual de humanistas que habían liderado el funcionamiento de los colegios mayores, los cuales gozaban de gran prestigio. En Italia, exonerados de sus funciones, se dedicaron a escribir y las prensas italianas publicaron lo más conspicuo de esa producción.
