| dc.description | Abstract: The relationship between Barbarians and the Roman Empire has never been a neutral subject, and much less it could be today, when the debate on ‘Europe's Christian roots’ focuses on the meaning of its identity. This paper sets out the views prevailing in the historiography of recent decades but also it turns to the context of the events that afflicted the Roman Empire through the fifth century. There is in fact a different approch to the subject, between the catastrophic paradigm and the view of scholars who attempted to circumvent the role of the Barbarians, as if they were mere onlookers and not real actors of history. The great complexity of the period invites for deepening the analysis of regional peculiarities, studying those multiple and repeated collapses of the Empire, which during the fifth century still survived elsewhere, while people thought it was already fallen | - |
| dc.description | Resúmen: La relación entre los bárbaros y el Imperio Romano nunca ha sido un tema neutral, y mucho menos puede serlo hoy en dia, cuando el debate sobre ‘las raíces Cristianas de Europa’ se centra en la cuestión de su identidad. Este trabajo expone las posturas prevalecientes en la historiografía de las décadas recientes pero también volverá sobre el contexto de los eventos que afligieron al Imperio Romano a lo largo del siglo quinto. Existen, de hecho, diferentes aproximaciones al tema, desde el paradigma de la catástrofe a la visión de aquellos académicos que intentan neutralizar el rol de los bárbaros como si fueran meros testigos y no reales actores de la historia. La gran complejidad del periodo invita a la profundización del análisis de las particularidades regionales, estudiando aquellos múltiples y repetidos colapsos del Imperio, el cual durante el siglo quinto todavía sobrevivía en otra parte, mientras la gente pensaba que ya había caído | - |
